Colours In Soweto
I think I’ve always been intrigued by how most black South Africans colour coordinate their outfits, if they have a green shoe on, something else has to be green that they’re wearing, let it be a hat or shirt or something;
and I have always wondered if a colour coordinated 2 or 3 piece outfit is an English influence on us cos it’s been our aesthetic for many decades now.
Then when I got into the shoot and saw how Mpume had styled the looks and it was exactly like what has been intriguing me; I thought it would be interesting for me to frame these styling ideas and interests using a backdrop of a Soweto architecture; while using the contrasting colours of the taste in the styling.
So basically all I did was use Soweto architecture to frame the styling ideas that the stylist had.
